Ankle Microsuction
Dr. Imber developed the treatment of "cankles" using microsuction. "Cankles" is the commonly used term to describe a lack of transition in shape between the ankles and the lower portion of the calf, giving the ankles a thick and stocky appearance. Ankle microsuction can help refine the shape of calves and ankles.
Dr. Imber is an internationally renowned plastic surgeon and has performed over 25,000 surgical procedures. He performs a full range of cosmetic surgery procedures in his New York City practice, popularized the S-LIFT, and developed the Limited Incision Facelift Technique. He has dedicated his career to helping his patients look as good as they feel, and always strives for the most natural results.
Ankle Microsuction Surgery
Dr. Imber has pioneered the treatment of “cankles” using microsuction, with generally excellent results. This procedure is extremely helpful for people who are bothered by the appearance of their “cankles.” Ankle microsuction shapes the inner and outer ankle creating a separation between calf and ankle. As one of the top 1% of plastic surgeons in America, Dr. Gerald Imber can provide you with amazing results from your ankle microsuction in New York.
Ankle Microsuction Goals
The goal of this surgical procedure is to create ankle definition between the ankle and calf. For most patients, this procedure results in a marked improvement in shape. For some, where the lower calf muscle is excessive, the result is less dramatic. In virtually all cases, there is significant, and often dramatic, improvement. Dr. Imber will discuss your goals during your consultation.
Ankle Microsuction Candidates
“Cankles” is the commonly used term to describe a lack of transition in shape between the ankles and the lower portion of the calf. The condition results in a relative shapeless ankle area, and can be due to many causes, the most common of which is a genetic predisposition. Sometimes weight gain concentrates in this area, causing “cankles” and it is sometimes caused by fluid retention. Call our office today to schedule a consultation.
What to Expect During Your Ankle Microsuction
During this procedure, Dr. Imber makes incisions about a quarter of an inch in length on both sides of the ankle so he can insert a small, sterile, steel cannula to remove all excess fat. This shapes the ankle from the inside and outside, and up toward the calf. The calf itself is not included in the procedure.
Recovering From Your Ankle Microsuction
Dr. Imber and his team of nurses will review all recovery information prior to your surgery. Generally, there is little post-operative discomfort, and the procedure is much appreciated for its aesthetic improvement. There will be some small scars where the incisions for the procedure were made. Complications from ankle microsuction are rare and include the possibility of numbness in the area.
Words From Dr Imber!
“Ankle microsuction or “cankle” surgery is a little known procedure that virtually changes the lives and self-perception of people who have genetically shapeless ankles. It is a fast, well tolerated procedure with very little downside. Unfortunately, the ability to do this is not as widely known as it should be.”

What Is Ankle Microsuction?
Ankle microsuction, or cankle surgery, is a procedure that virtually changes the lives and self-perception of people who have genetically shapeless ankles. Incisions about a quarter of an inch in length are made on both sides of the ankle, and a small, sterile, steel cannula is inserted to remove all excess fat. This shapes the ankle from both inside and outside, and up toward the calf. The calf itself is not included in the procedure.

Most healthy adults have the condition from youth, and it is purely an anatomic variation and does not signal illness.
